ECA September Rally to Cowes Yacht Haven, with option to visit Southampton Boat Show, 13 to 15 Sept 2019. FINAL CALL
Friday 13 September HW Portsmouth BST 11.52 (4.5m)
It’s an early/mid morning start time from EYH, stemming the last of the flood towards West Pole, to pick up a favourable Spring tide to Cowes where some of us will meet on Friday. Please call Cowes Yacht Haven on VHF channel 80 (or phone 01983 299 975) for berthing instructions and look out for Witch Hazel’s wooden mast and bowsprit! Assuming our boats berth in Cowes at approx. 16:00 BST, there will be drinks on board Witch Hazel from 17.30 when people can decide whether to eat communally and, if so, where. There are a wide variety of eating and drinking places in Cowes or we could opt for a bulk buy of fish and chips and eat on board the host boat and “overflow” to adjacent ECA boats, if required.
Saturday 14 September HW Portsmouth BST 12.26 (4.6m)
We have a choice of options:-
Southampton Boat Show
Those who arrived on Friday may take the Red Jet ferry to Southampton where the Boat Show takes place almost adjacent to the ferry terminal and there is a shuttle bus service from the Ferry Terminal towards the Show Entrance. Red Jet usually does a discounted combined crossing and Show entrance ticket.
This year the Southampton Boat Show is sponsored by the Borrow a Boat and the attractions include: Pip Hare’s Vendee Globe Boat, The tall ship Shtandart, Gipsy Moth IV, Try-a-dive (useful for those prop problems..), Try-a-boat, the famous Guinness Bar, and much more!
If you wish to keep up to date with the latest information, please check out the Southampton Boat Show web site:
Alternatively, do your own thing for the day with options including:
Southampton sightseeing or “retail therapy” – West Quay, Ikea, etc
Exploring the many delights of Cowes
IOW Sightseeing – taking the bus to other parts of the island – e.g. Ryde, Newport, Yarmouth, etc.
For those who only take the week-end, this can be treated as an ordinary Saturday-Sunday out-and-back rally with just the one night stop in Cowes.
A short drinks party will be held on Witch Hazel at 17.30. Please bring a bottle and light snacks and be prepared to “show and tell” whatever you bought at the Show or any brochures you collected. I have booked a table at the Duke of York Public House for 20 people on Saturday 14 Sept – 7:30pm start – no pre-ordering of food is required, but we need to give an idea of our numbers. It would an early morning eastward passage back to Chichester Harbour and Emsworth, with favourable east-going tides in the Solent from 04.30 to 12.00hrs approx.
