ECA May Bank Holiday Rally to Portsmouth Harbour Clubs; Hardway SC and Portchester SC

This Rally is different to our normal Bank Holiday marina based rally format, we will be visiting other Clubs so we may need to be able to raft up, moor to piles, operate without shore power or water links, and use our tenders. We need to be ready to divert to another venue if a venue is full up.

It’s an experiment, in response to the increasing need to provide substantial deposits when booking Solent rallies. It’s also good practice for the Paimpol Festival visit!

If Members find it unsuitable as a Rally format, we’ll revert to commercial berths, with just the odd overnight anchorage or club visit.

For those of you who may not be aware, Portsmouth QHM has just published a new Local Notice to Mariners which introduces a significant change to the small boat channel.

This is published in the LNTM 24/17 which was issued on 7th April and details can be found on the Royal Navy website via the link below.

So, once you’ve passed Ballast Pile to port, monitoring VHF Ch 11 & 16, proceed northwards towards the inner Carrier  Transit poles and the UHAF(Up Harbour Ammunition Facility), keeping to the Gosport shore. After passing the ‘Explosion’ Museum waterfrontage, there are two semi derelict jetties, then among the Clubs moorings, there will come into view the ‘Jolly Roger’ pub, then the Hardway SC Clubhouse and long pontoon, with 4 bare piles at it’s end(Storm Katie damage!).

You can ‘Google it’ and get a birdseye view of it’s location.

Be prepared to raft up and to take the ground at the inner ends of the pontoon. I have observed no water or shore power on the pontoon except at the root.

Berths are ‘first come first served’, so if you can get there earlier than Friday, please do so.

Your OoDs may be on either Thalata, or Tringa II, or both, that has not been decided as yet, due to other commitments. Look for the large ECA Rally flag.

We shall stay at Hardway until Saturday, when we will pass on the flood up to the Portchester SC moorings. Here they have a small drying pontoon and pile moorings on the Roman Castle side of the channel up to Port Solent and just NE of the Castle.

The Club may be still be undergoing renovations, but there is a pub and a branch of Mother Kelly’s fish & chips nearby.

We hope to visit the Castle on Sunday before returning to the Hardway SC pontoons ready to return to home berths on Monday. If the Hardway pontoon eastern end is full, we will divert to Haslar Marina.

NB; EYH berthholders may need to berth at Haslar to catch the EYH Monday afternoon sill.

Participating skippers are reminded that all ECA rallies and events are carried out under rule 22 of the Emsworth Cruising Association Rules as published in the Emsworth Cruising Association Yearbook.

Participation in an ECA rally or event is taken as acknowledgement and understanding of this rule.

The ECA draws to the attention of skippers and crew attending, that full responsibility for sea worthiness of boats and experience of crew attending, is held with the skipper of the boat sailing to the  rally, all information given in guidance should be checked before setting out.

It is a recommendation of the ECA and the RYA that full and working safety equipment is carried on board for the protection of crew as laid down in RYA guidelines.  Third party insurance must be valid for the boat taking part.
