ECA Theatre Rally – Sunset Boulevard

A glance at the programme will show that we have planned a rally to The Kings Theatre, Southsea on the weekend of the 17th and 18th October.  For those wanting a latish season sail this entails a quick dash from EYH (or your home berth) to Southsea Marina just insideLangstoneHarbour and turn to Port.  If that doesn’t appeal, using the car is an option.  This ‘tradition’ (we did it for the first time last year to see Sister Act!) was so popular we decided to do it again. As OOD for the theatre part (someone else will look after the sailing and berthing bit) I have purchased a block of 20 Dress Circle seats at £16 per seat for the evening, final, performance of Sunset Boulevard (music by Andrew Lloyd Weber) performed by the Portsmouth Players.  Unlike many musicals, Sunset Boulevard has a strong story-line with romance, pathos, irony and tragedy.

The Portsmouth Players have a reputation for putting on musicals to a very high standard with professional musicians and a professional director.   On a more personal note, my wife, Sheila, has secured the leading lady role of Norma Desmond.  This is a demanding and brilliant role for a lady of a certain age and I know from the effort she has put in already that she will provide a ‘blinding performance’.  I already have pledges for half the tickets from Neil and Karen Fuller, Dick and Alice Tyrrell, Mark and Suzy Dorsett, Charles and Nicky Harrison, John and Julie Strickland and myself.  The remainder are on a first come first served basis.  Extra tickets are currently on sale at The Kings Box Office (the Box Office number is 02392 828282) but they may not all be seated together.

High Tide at Northney is 14.50 BST at 4.4m so assuming most can leave EYH by about 13.00, it’s about a 2½ hour sail to Southsea leaving just enough time to change and share a taxi to The Kings.   Last year most of us met for a pub meal near the theatre at about 5.30pm and the show starts at 7.30pm.  That format seemed to be popular and the food was good so we will do the same again – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

An email to me on derek.ellinor@gmail.com or telephone 02392 426460 will secure your tickets followed asap by a cheque (so I can sleep easier!)

Final details to attendees nearer the time.
