Shepard’s Wharf Cowes
for Yarmouth Old Gaffers Festival
Friday 30 May- Sunday 1 June 2014
This is a jaunt additional to the usual rallies. Every year the Old Gaffers meet in Yarmouth to celebrate traditional boats, drink beer and generally career about on the water topsails aloft and smocks caught in the main sheet. It does make a pretty sight and over the years Yarmouth Town has added lots of other attractions including a French market, classic cars, music and frolics and- sometimes- classic ferrets (caged).
Needless to say, Yarmouth Harbour is best avoided for the duration of this extravaganza so berths have been booked at the ever reliable Shepard’s Wharf in Cowes for Saturday night.
In practical terms, given a lunchtime high water, it would probably be better to arrive at Shepard’s on Friday in order to enjoy a whole day in Yarmouth. John is planning to take Carina down for these days.
Friday 30th May 1322 BST (4.5m)
Sunday 1st June 1448 BST (4.5m)
It will be necessary to take public transport to Yarmouth: if using the bus, the Number 1
runs into Newport (10 minute ride) and the Number 7 will take you on to Yarmouth (35 minutes but the scenery is lovely). Both run until late at night. (The bus people Southern Vectis have a website with timetables).
Witch Hazel will be visible in the harbour all day ( not racing). When you arrive or need refreshment please contact us on the mobile and we shall conduct you to the boat. Security gets a little tightened during the weekend. The pontoon will be in free flow for a time so that you can view the boats.
Most restaurants in Yarmouth are not taking bookings during the Festival so we shall sneak in somewhere nice in the early evening. Alternatively, we can buy a picnic from the Market and eat on the boat or the Green.
