ECA West Country Cruise in Company: 02~05 July 2010 onwards
This will be a serious cruise, particularly if we reach the Scillies, where the Atlantic swell and weather patterns and the tides determine your length of stay, what anchorages you can use and ports of refuge you can reach on the mainland.
There is little point in going into too much detail over the navigational concerns at this stage. A lot will depend on wind and tide on the day, and of course, for the rest of the cruise. The longer East going tidal streams and prevailing winds will be against us for the outward legs of this cruise.
The Skipper should ensure that adequate safety equipment for the whole crew is carried, the crew and boat papers are in order and the vessel is well found and able to cope with the conditions which may be encountered offshore.
It is now a legal requirement for a Skipper to prepare a Passage Plan for any trip which leaves sheltered waters (eg: Chi. Hbr.). It must include the weather forecasts consulted by the Skipper in deciding whether or not to sail on the day.
If you have not done such a trip or passage plan before, Dick and Richard, will be happy to meet up prior to the crossing to discuss your plans and share our experience. Members intending to participate on the Rally should therefore text or e-mail their Estimated Day and Time of Departure from homeports for the West to Richard &/or Dick not later than Friday 25/06/2010.
There look to be three starting options for WestWard Ho!;
Aims to leave from Yarmouth IoW on Saturday 03 July for a fast sail down to the Scillies, with crew changes down West.
Will set off down to the Isles of Scilly with Badgie II (albeit at a more sedate pace!) then will do their usual West Country thing in August.
Don’t have a set July start date yet, but must be back in the Solent by the 24 July for the Wayfarer International Rally and then a neighbour’s wedding!
